Riverhead, NY (February 13, 2021) – Around 10 p.m. on Thursday night, February 11, a fatal pedestrian accident took place in Riverhead.
According to police, the accident took place at 953 West Main Street. Police confirmed that 54-year-old Matthew Nemschick from Mattituck was driving while intoxicated when he struck a pedestrian walking in the area.
Paramedics and numerous other responders were immediately dispatched to the scene of the accident. The pedestrian, who has not yet been identified, was taken to the hospital for treatment of severe trauma. He died while hospitalized.
Nemschick was arrested at the scene by police and has since been charged with driving while intoxicated.
Police continue their investigation into the circumstances of the accident.
