Manhattan, NY (October 24, 2020) – Around 5:29 p.m. on Saturday evening, seven people were injured as a result of an apartment fire in Manhattan.

Fire crews initially received the call in the evening hours where they arrived at the scene of the incident on 5^th Avenue. They found that a fire had started on the second floor of a six-story apartment.

Paramedics and numerous other responders were dispatched to the scene of the accident. They confirmed that seven people were injured as a result of the fire. Five of these were identified as civilians and two were identified as NYPD officers. Their conditions are not yet known.

Fire crews were able to put out the fire by 6:17 pm. They have not been able to identify the cause of the fire.

The investigation into the circumstances of the fire continues.

Queens, NY (October 23, 2020) – Around 1:25 p.m. on Thursday, October 22, one person was injured in a car crash in Queens.

According to police, the accident took place at the intersection of Flushing Avenue and Woodward Avenue. Local law enforcement officials confirmed that a gold minivan was driving in the area when it struck the side of a compact SUV at the intersection for reasons that are not yet known.

Paramedics, fire crews, and numerous other responders were dispatched to the scene of the collision to assist those in need. Both vehicles were badly damaged and at least one person was trapped in their vehicle and had to be extricated by fire crews.

One person, who has not yet been identified, was rushed to the hospital for treatment of their injuries. Their condition is not known at this time.

Manhattan, NY (October 22, 2020) – Around 3 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, October 20, a critical pedestrian accident took place at an intersection in Manhattan.

Police confirmed that the collision took place at the intersection of 5^th Avenue and East 90^th Street when a man in a wheelchair was struck by a vehicle that was traveling through the intersection at the same time.

The 94-year-old victim, whose name has not yet been released, was transported to the New York Presbyterian Hospital with lacerations to the head.

The driver of the vehicle, who did not receive injuries, remained at the scene of the accident and cooperated with the police.

Police worked the scene for several hours, which led to delays for some time.

The investigation into the accident is currently ongoing.

Manhattan, NY (October 21, 2020) – Around 2 a.m. on Wednesday morning, October 21, a moped accident involving a DUI driver took place in Manhattan.

Police confirmed that the accident took place at the intersection of Delancey Street and Bowery when a man on a moped was struck by an intoxicated driver in an SUV. The Toyota RAV4 was turning onto Delancey when he struck the driver of the moped, who was identified as a 38-year-old man.

The man on the moped was rushed to the nearest hospital. He has been listed in critical condition.

The 35-year-old driver of the SUV was taken into police custody after police confirmed that he was driving while intoxicated.

No further details have been released but the investigation continues.

Brooklyn, NY (October 19, 2020) – A woman was critically injured after being involved in a pedestrian accident in the Clinton Hill section of Brooklyn early Monday morning. Just after 6 a.m., on October 19, the New York Police Department responded to the site of a crash on DeKalb Avenue.

According to reports from local news sources, a 72-year-old woman was walking on DeKalb Avenue when she was struck by a sedan at the intersection with Clinton Avenue. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and called for medical assistance immediately after.

The driver was not injured in this accident. However, the pedestrian sustained critical injuries. The victim was stabilized at the scene and transported to an area hospital for treatment. The police and firefighters closed off the intersection for several hours as they initiated investigations into the accident. At this time, investigations are ongoing.

Car accidents caused by distracted drivers are a huge problem nationwide, including here on Long Island. In fact, nearby New York City might have the most distracted drivers in the country, if a recent survey by auto insurance comparison site The Zebra is to be believed.

The company interviewed 2,605 American drivers online, including at least 100 people from each of 25 major American cities. The respondents answered questions about how often they committed certain distracted driving acts from a scale of 0 (never) to 10 (always). The Zebra then aggregated each city’s scores, giving them a maximum possible value of 100.

New York came in first place with an aggregate score of 43.7. Washington, D.C., was the only other city with a score above 40.

Distractions besides phones

We all know that smartphones have driven the distracted driving issue for the past several years. A total of 58 percent of those surveyed admitted that they had read something on their phones while driving, and 56 percent said they have texted and driven before. But other bad habits were also common, such as drivers who said they pick their nose (47.2 percent), eat a full meal (35.9 percent), kiss somebody else (27 percent), or change their clothes while behind the wheel (26.8 percent).

This survey relied on self-reporting, which could mean that many of the subjects minimized the extent of their distracted driving habits. But the picture is clear: virtually every time you are driving in or around New York City, you will be next to a distracted driver for at least a few seconds — more than enough time for that bad driver to hit you and give you serious injuries.

Cyclist fatalities continue to rise, and research shows that New York sees more than its fair share. Bike deaths have become so common across the state in recent years that New York is now the fourth-deadliest state in the nation for cyclists. 

According to Outside, bike fatalities nationwide have reached their highest level since 1990. In 2018, 857 cyclists lost their lives on U.S. roadways, and the number of cyclists dying has increased each year since 2010. 

Urban areas are more dangerous 

While New York cyclists face higher injury and death risks than bicyclists in many other states, those who travel by bike in New York City face even more notable dangers. While the city saw 10 cyclist deaths in 2018, this figure rose to 29 in 2019, raising important questions about what is contributing to the increase. 

Speed is a common contributor 

Many fatal bike crashes involve excessive speed. Between 2015 and 2019, speed was a factor in 9% of all U.S. bike fatalities. 

Speed limits have risen in many areas of the country, and higher speed limits bring with them higher injury and fatality rates. Until 1995, cities and towns could not set speed limits that exceeded 65 mph. When communities increased their speed limits, the number of cyclist deaths they experienced rose as well. 

Other factors play a role 

Alcohol played a role in 16% of all vehicle-bicycle collisions between 2015 and 2019. Furthermore, hit-and-run crashes constituted a fifth of all incidents that caused cyclist deaths during that span. 

Motorists are driving more and using cellphones more when doing so. With so many distracted drivers on the roads, the risk of a collision rises. 

Americans have also increasingly favored larger cars, trucks and SUVs, which are more likely to cause bicyclist deaths than smaller passenger vehicles. When SUVs and trucks strike cyclists, those bike riders face a 50% higher chance of dying than riders in collisions with traditional sedans.
